Curved roofs and exposed glulam beams
Chelwood, Hooke, Dorset
At Chelwood the clients wanted to connect the house with the garden and make a dramatic open-plan living space and they had a clear idea in their mind that they wanted it to take ok this curved form. They had moved to the house for the lifestyle it offered but they wanted to transform the character of the house into something more contemporary and use materials that were more appropriate to its rural setting.

The project ended up being a complete remodelling inside and out so that the house read as one well considered whole. In this sensitive location opposite a church in the centre of a west Dorset village the design had to result in a low key building that were responsive to its context.

New aluminium windows and a heat pump improved the performance and comfort of the house and reduced energy bills. A highly insulated timber frame with recycled Warmcel insulation together with wood fibre insulation was used for extension to ensure the highest thermal standards and a breathable envelope.
