⌂ Coppet House
A rural, split-level bungalow is to become a whole new home
Coppet house is nestled into the side of a hill sharing its name, looking north across rolling fields. The original bungalow is slightly unusual in its shallow monopitch roofs and split level, long rectangular plan aligned with the grain of the site, all which help it feel very much a part of the hillside. We wanted to take these characteristics forward in the new design and really celebrate the northern views while updating the house overall to serve the clients into their retirement.
The monopitch forms of this house have been retained, and celebrated with a new central window seat that pops up above the roofline and offers an unusual portrait view of the fields. New copper coloured metal roofing adds a bright new shine overall. New larger windows throughout take in the rural views and improve the relationship of the house to its approach on the west and its new patio and garden to the east.
While adding additional indoor space was the starting point in the brief, there is also a desire to improve the overall appearance of the house, and be sustainable where we can. New limecrete floors help the beathability of the house, and innovative UK-produced Hemp fibre insulation within a timber frame forms the walls. Opening up the ceilings to be vaulted and knocking rooms together make this little house feel a lot bigger.
