The house is to use cutting edge sustainable building materials and methods, with material sourcing and recycling in mind. Innovative SIPs panels form the superstructure, ensuring a highly insulated and airtight envelope for long-term energy savings, while also providing a rapid construction time. Stone walls in key areas add thermal mass to the building, while solar on the roof harvests electricity to run the Air Source Heat Pump and dMVHR ventilation systems.

Coast House, Lyme Regis

The seaside town of Lyme Regis on the Jurrasic coast has a varied array of architectural styles from different eras, and is recently becoming known for its exciting contemporary architecture.

Our clients came to us with a large empty plot and spectacular coastal views, so naturally this was a site to get excited about. The brief was to design a sustainable contemporary SIPs home for them that would celebrate its outlook and provide an inspiring space with a range of open and cosy rooms.

The site slopes diagonally NW to SE with the views being at the east and south directions. The new house follows this grain of the site, arcing around so that all the key rooms have access to the views. At the centre is the kitchen and dining room, with large glazed doors onto the southern terrace. Alongside this is the living room which is a double height space, with double height glazing, feature glulam beams and doors to the front terrace and rear courtyard. Two bedrooms are tucked in the roof of the main area, not quite a full second storey. The side wing provides the utility room, ground floor shower and then an office separated from the noisy spaces of the house, with its own terrace next to the garden. On the other side, a master wing leads off to a quiet part of the site, with its own doors onto the terrace and the view, and a curved linking snug for a lobby space which turns the corner and allows quiet reflection with the sea as a backdrop.
