Windfall Cottage

Project info +

Located above the Jurassic coast and near to West Bay (Bridport) this residential project gained planning approval in the spring of 2022.

The client came to us wanting to build a small bespoke green building in the grounds of a listed cottage. The design aims to make use of the views to the north and east, while being hidden and tucked into the bank to the south. To cope with the slope up the site, the house is laid out across three distinct hipped-roof pavilions at different levels, connected with little links. Materials are natural and local, to preserve the setting of the listed building while enhancing the habitat for wildlife. Inside the rooms have vaulted ceilings to give a sense of space and light in this nestled-in home.

The client is keen to take an environmentally conscious approach to the construction of the house a fabric first, low energy mindset. The form of the building with the three hipped-roof pavilions brings several sustainable benefits. The pitch and size of the south-facing planes allows for plentiful solar generation through PV tiles or panels. The remaining planes are green roofs which offer ecological benefits to the site. A central rooflight to each of the pavilions provides natural daylighting internally and offers a natural stack ventilation effect, reducing the electrical demand of the home.
