⌂ Coast House
A sub-urban home with cutting edge sustainable and efficient SIP construction
This area of Lyme Regis is populated with large villas of a variety of ages. Greenway is a close going up the slope of Horseman’s Hill, and each property benefits from sea and coastline views to the east.
The new house is aligned with the grain of the site, which falls diagonally across the site. At the centre is the kitchen and dining room, oriented to take in the key views with large glazed doors. Alongside this is the living room which is a double height space, with double height glazing, feature glulam beams and doors to the front terrace and rear courtyard. Two bedrooms are tucked in the roof of the main area, not quite a full second storey. The side wing provides the utility room, ground floor shower and then an office separated from the noisy spaces of the house, with its own terrace next to the garden. On the other side, a master wing leads off to a quiet part of the site, with its own doors onto the terrace and the view, and a curved linking snug for a lobby space.
The house is to use cutting edge sustainable building materials and methods, with material sourcing and recycling in mind. Innovative SIPs panels form the superstructure, ensuring a highly insulating and airtight envelope for the long term, while also providing a precise and rapid construction time. Stone walls in key areas add thermal mass to the building, while solar on the roof harvests electricity to run the Air Source Heat Pump and dMVHR ventilation systems.
