Contemporary timber frame sustainable house in mature East Devon garden

New Build Sustainable Home

Anglers, East Devon, completed 2018

Anglers was a self build project built by a couple who both work from home. This new dwelling in East Devon replaced a tired old bungalow. The house was designed to take advantage of the views from all parts of the house.

Alison and Mark’s house is a timber framed self-build, eco-house, insulated with recycled wood fibre and with an extremely airtight envelope to maximise energy efficiency. This method of insulating allows the fabric of the building to breathe in a way that alternative 'sealed' envelope solutions do not. This results in an internal living environment that is healthier as water vapour is naturally regulated. This is an environmentally friendly fabric first building method.

A demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) system was installed which allows internal moisture to be regulated and drawn out to maintain a pleasant living environment. It’s an easier to install and much lower energy system than the alternative MVHR (mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system).

The house is also triple glazed to ensure the highest thermal standards. As well as being super thermally efficient, renewable technologies are used such as a heat pump and solar PVs so this is a really low impact building.
