Thorney Mill Barn Conversion
Project info +
We were commissioned to design the conversion of a dilapidated storage barn into additional accommodation for the Mill Cottage. The building is attached to the client's home, a grade II listed mill next to the River Parrett.

The client has carefully restored and maintained the Mill over the past 20 years so it was important that the conversion of the barn was done with equal care and attention to detail. A beautifully crafted oak framed dormer window gives extra headroom in the new mezzanine room over the car port and roof windows flood the lower room with light from above.

Where possible old beams have been retained and where necessary new oak beams have been used. Remedial work has been done to the stone walls to ensure they are structurally sound, they have been rebuilt as necessary and then re-pointed.

Careful thought was given to using appropriate materials in this historic building. Wood fibre insulation and lime render was used on the external stone walls to ensure they continue to breathe and that the internal space was insulated whilst ensuring no damp issues were created.
