Coast House

Project info +

Located in Charmouth the Coast house has unbroken views over the Dorset coastline. Construction on the new house was completed in 2020. This self-build was a labour of love with the excellent quality of finish largely due to the care and skill of the client in many key areas of the build.

The focus for the design of this contemporary house were the coastal views to the south. Large sliding doors provide uninterrupted views to the coast on the entrance level. The living spaces are on this floor to make the most of the stunning views.

The bedrooms are on the lower ground floor, so have a more private outlook to the garden. This ‘upside down’ layout allows the home to appear as single storey from the road, helping the building to sit comfortably on this residential street.

It uses passive principles to heat and ventilate its rooms, solar gain is taken in from the large amount of south glazing but overheating is prevented by a large overhang of the roof. Thermally broken windows and a high level of insulation prevent heat loss through the fabric of the house. The super structure is a timber frame which is clad in sustainably sourced cedar. Painted brick wraps around the lower floor contrasting with the soft cedar.
